Military Assistance (MAP)

From adopting military units to donating TV-VCR units for American soldiers in Bosnia, the Veterans of Foreign Wars is continuing in its benevolence to others by providing moral and financial support to military service members worldwide.

The VFW's Military Assistance Program (MAP) is a quality of life initiative that focuses on easing the financial emergencies of deploying service members and supporting them and their family through the hardships of deployment. MAP also provides one-time grants up to $500 to service members needing emergency financial assistance. In addition, MAP has forged partnership with various service providers, including
vetjobs.com, aimed at providing the transitioning service member with relocation and employment assistance.

Emergency Financial Assistance

The Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States, in conjunction with its Posts and Departments, may provide emergency financial aid to qualified military personnel or their immediate family members for the purpose of alleviating financial hardships resulting from military deployments.  Such emergency aid will be in the form of a “one-time grant” to the service member or qualified family member.

This program will be maintained as part of the Military Assistance Program (MAP) within the Membership Department, and the following eligibility and guidelines will be used to determine merit and the distribution of funds.

Eligibility

The service member must be on "Active Duty" or in an activated National Guard or reserve unit serving in a designated "Theater of Operations." The term “serving” will include an immediate deployment or redeployment status.

An “emergency situation” is defined as a situation due to an immediate need brought about by an event or events beyond the control of the individual service member or spouse and not due to mismanagement of family income or for extravagant expenditures.

Before applying for an Emergency Financial Assistance Grant, the requesting individual must contact the local Family Support Office (FSO) to first determine resources available through any associated military organizations.

Guidelines

Each request for emergency assistance will originate by an FSO contacting a VFW Department or local Post. The pertinent commander or adjutant of the VFW Department or Post may concurrently donate funds from their Department or Post when requesting MAP funds and should so stipulate in the attached application form.

Requests will be verified through the individual’s FSO and the VFW Department or Post Commander (or Adjutant for the Commander), by the signatures on the application.

The Director of the Military Assistance Program (MAP) will ensure eligibility of service member/family member and legitimacy of each request for assistance. The request will then be submitted by the Membership Director for final approval by the Adjutant General (or authorized designee).

Requests for funds greater than $500.00 will require an itemized listing of requested funding events. The Adjutant General will personally approve grant requests of $1,500.00 or higher.

A check in the amount requested will be issued directly to the service member or qualified family member from the VFW National Headquarters, unless payment has already been made to the service member or qualified family member, in which case the check will be forwarded to the Department or Post.

Adopt-A-Unit

There has always been a common bond between those serving in the military and the VFW. An extension of this bond is the VFW's Adopt-A-Unit program, which pairs a Post with a military unit. Besides sending "goody" packages to the troops, Posts work on the local level to offer moral support to the dependents left behind when a unit deploys. Since the war on terrorism began in 2001, more than 1,000 military units, including U.S. Navy ship squadrons and U.S. Army infantry units, have been adopted.

Posts participating in AAU may qualify for additional MAP financial support for sponsoring events with military units.

The procedure for adopting a unit is simple:

  • Post or Auxiliary completes an adoption application.

  • Sends completed application to VFW National Headquarters or fax to 816-968-2728.

There is no initial cost in adopting a unit.
This program does not end when the troops re-deploy home; they and their families continue to need our backing and assistance.

For more information about adopting a unit contact your Department MAP chairperson or contact MAP personnel at:
